Branding for a baroque art exhibition

Východoslovenské Múzeum, founded in 1872, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Slovakia. My task was to create the visual identity for their newest Baroque exhibition: Experience Baroque.

Working with museums is always an enjoyable and fascinating experience for me, as it allows for deep research and access to a wide range of assets in the museum’s collection and Východoslovenské Múzeum was no exception. In close collaboration with the Ústav technológií a inovácií (responsible for the exhibition’s conceptual design and production), and after thoroughly exploring their extensive Baroque collection, we agreed on a visual direction.

Branding

We chose chiaroscuro, the dramatic contrast of light and dark, as the core visual principle of the exhibition’s identity. After studying the preliminary renders of the exhibition space, I decided to use deep blue hues paired with white contrasting elements as the primary color combination across all visual materials. This was complemented by floral motifs in the background and the use of golden ornaments and statues as focal visual elements, creating a rich and striking aesthetic that immediately communicates the exhibition’s theme to visitors.

For the exhibition’s logo, continuing the chiaroscuro concept, I selected an elegant serif typeface with high contrast between thick and thin strokes, perfectly echoing the ornate and dramatic essence of the Baroque style.
